Found it a last. It is Mr JGR Watson's special , built in Glasgow during 1946-47 as a trials and hillclimb car and evidently quite successful. The photograph was published with an advertisement for its sale in 1948, where its key features apart from its Mercury engine were its performance of 0-80mph in 13sec and a 'crab tracked rear' ........ all yours for £800ono.

Come to think of it, £800 was a fair bit of money back then - would have bought a house.
