Solved NIC#1070 - SS 16hp Special

D-type

The only SS earlier than the SS II was the SS I.  But William Lyons would never have made a car that ugly, erm, inelegant.  Is it an SS I based special?

That's exactly what it is, and you have earned the point.

The car was advertised for sale as an SS 16hp Special with 2/4 seat body. With that horsepower rating it must have been based on the 2054cc Standard 6-cylinder engine and therefore an SS1. The ad stated that the car had been rebuilt in 1953, but I don't know  when the "improvements" were first effected. Maybe it was to lighten the car, or maybe it was constructed from a crashed SS1.
