Pontiac had provided plenty of Firebirds (damaged in shipping due to a train derailment) to serve as stunt cars for typical driving sequences where the car stays on the ground, but KITT didn't always stay on the ground. The Firebirds couldn't survive aerial stunts, so they built the Flivver to avoid completely destroying one of the Firebirds with every jump. It was basically a VW-powered dune biggy/sand rail. They could mount an inexpensive fiberglass or rubber body on it and launch it through the air over and over without issue.
Thank you!!
