BMW 327...
Began as a BMW, but not a 327.

True, but there's more to it than that.

BMW 328 Coupe Mille Miglia from 1937
The photo wasn't taken in 1937, nor was it taken at the Mille Miglia. The car did begin as a BMW 328, but again, there's more to it than that.
You've both contributed vital components, so I'll lock it for the two of you. Three questions/guesses each.
LOCKED for hermanoto and sichel.
in 1957 it ran at the Liege Rome Liege rallye, entrants Robert Reip and Reggie (Reginald?) Boven, number 102, license F-8854. It was yellow at the time, "la Petite Jaune"
According to a magazine clipping regarding "Retromobile" it was a 327.
from 2010 onwards it ran at the Mille Miglia in the hands of Massimo Ermini and Lapo Ermini.
According to a BMW press report(!) it is an BMW 328 coupe.
So, now it must have a 328 engine.
Tony A. is writing a book about the rallye, so he must have more info (but iI don't ask him)
... Retromobile 2007, for sale at Bruno Vendiese

You've found the right car, as well as the name of the owner/builder (mentioned in your post). However, the original BMW engine and other components were swapped out over time for non-BMW upgrades. Dig around and you should be able to find more.
Now
LOCKED for hermanoto only.
Wherever I look the car is described as a 1937 BMW 328. If it wasn't based on the 328, a similar wheelbased BMW from 1937 was used, the 319/1. A.o. the engine had to be enlarged from 1911cc to 1971.

It began as a standard BMW 328 in 1937. Over time, it was heavily modified by the owner/driver. As I stated before,
the original BMW engine and other components were swapped out for non-BMW upgrades.
Still LOCKED for you.
In 1954 it got the fixed hardtop with the curved windshield. Later on also independent rear suspension, VW front suspension, wheels & brakes from a Porsche and a Mercedes-Benz engine.

All good! Now, name the owner/builder of this special and the point is yours.
Still LOCKED for hermanoto.
it was knownas the "Reip Spéciale", so Robert Reip was the builder
