This is a VW Type 82, the so-called 'Kübelwagen'. I haven't found the converter yet.

You found the right car. The conversion was done by a company.

Was the company a coachbuilder, or was this division merely a sideline?

I know hardly anything about the company, but I don't think that it was a coachbuilder primarily.
