When I´ve started this topic:
http://www.autopuzzles.com/forum/index.php?topic=16548.msg162225#msg162225
I decided to dig on my HD and show you my favorite advertising conversions here.
Any contibutions are very welcome!
EDIT: 10 years after - in April 2021 - I learned, that the cover car - the whale - was based upon an Audi 10/30PS Modell B

You can compete :)
-
Another great thread, Grob. :)
One of my unsolved puzzles, once solved, will slot right in here.
-
Thank all the other guys who´ve posted those great photos.
I think autopuzzles.com is the best platform to share and collect facts and photos of any special automobilistic topic out there.

Electrolux wasn't the only vacuum cleaner on the road ;)

The last ones for now ;)

Amazing thread, of course.
I had started something like this in some group puzzles. The first one featured some cars that you meet again in Grob's thread here. See:
http://www.autopuzzles.com/forum/index.php?topic=8954.75
In the other two ( http://www.autopuzzles.com/forum/index.php?topic=5673.0 and http://www.autopuzzles.com/forum/index.php?topic=7022.0 ) there were also advertising cars, but not only.

Another one:
-
I want it :o :hyper:
Do you have any idea what is underneath this marvellous body? Some German or Austrian tricycle?
-
No, sorry, the source only told about its presentation at an early 1930´s austrian fair.
But it said nothing about the basis vehicle.
-
This one promoted a 1932 home construction fair:

Another example of a very creative 1932 ad-mobile:

What was here first, the egg or the chicken?
-
Sweet!
-
I'd never seen this one before.
-
Funny, but I think we should stay to let´s say pre 1980 vehicles, O.K.?
-
That's the 2nd time in 3 days that I've been chastised for posting my own photos. I checked this carefully to see if there was any restriction on date. As a matter of fact, you wrote "any contributions will be welcome."
If I fail to follow rules or if I post something that's outside the bounds as set by the starter of the topic, I can understand being warned, chastised or even banned. However, in each of the two cases, there's been nothing improper about what I posted.
I don't think it's a good idea for me to post any of my photos any more. My time machine is broken so I can't go back and take photos of the 20s or 30s...or even 70s no matter how much I'd like to. If people want to see my photos, there's a website listed in my profile that I've run since 1997. There are lots of photos there and they're constantly being added and updated. But no more here. That's it.
-
Ray, I´m sorry and I did not want to upset you or anyone else.
I did not even ask you to remove your photos, did I?
My idea of this thread was to unearth all the fabulous old advertising vehicles that are lost in our memories.
Please do not take this personally in any way, O.K.?

No, you didn't ask me to remove them. I did so on my own.
I appreciate the apology, however, given the fact that, as I wrote, I was chastised twice in 3 days for posting my photos, I won't be doing that any more.
I don't hold a grudge, nor any ill feelings toward you, Grob. As I've written to you, I admire your photographic work and I know you work hard on this forum to create interesting puzzles and to keep the memories of vintage motoring alive. Still, there's an English phrase that goes, "once burned, twice shy." I feel like I've been burned twice, so I guess I can feel 4 times shy. I'll post my photos where I have for the last 15 years...on the website listed in my profile and some on FaceBook. But not here.

Two more designs from 1926:

You'll say that this one is off-topic, but I'll reply that it's a fine example of the effect of Lasalle Wines on the designer.

Mr. Beep was a project initiated by the BP Oil Company in the late 50s and early sixties. Mr. Beep, the safety car, was used to bring traffic safety lessons to school children and he was used during public occasions like the Canadian National Exhibition, fall fairs and other public gatherings. He also visited schools and made several television appearances. Often Mr. Beep was used in conjunction with police school safety programs. The car underneath the Mr. Beep's facade was a small 1959 Zephyr convertible made by British Ford.

Hey there...
I've noticed you've locked the threads you've posted on recently. Was that on purpose? Or is this a system glitch?
Note, I can post here because I have admin rights.

Oh, I´m still so used to the last website design, that I´ve automatically pushed the upper two buttons... ;)
Sorry.
I´ll try to unlock all the topics.

A 1915 spark plug ad mobile:

This is more of a public relations stunt than an advertisement, but I thought it might fit here.
A demonstration of the "strength" of the DKW body and chassis.
The article stated it was probably faked a bit by blocking up the chassis off the ground as the tyres and suspension show no deflection at all.
Bill
-
Yes, that´s a famous photo.
The closer I look at it I am sure it has been retouched at the inner side of each wheel to hide the 4 jacks, the car frame rested on... :)
-
It sure looks like it.

Doing it all for Sylvia:
-
A few weeks ago my wife and I were walking across a parking lot, and came across the curious vehicle shown below. My wife snapped the pictures on her cell phone, but there was no one around, and absolutely no lettering on the vehicle (perhaps the vehicle was not yet completed), so I have no idea what was being advertised, unless it was some sort of seafood restaurant.
-
That looks like "Art the Lobster" by AJ Strasser.
Art the Lobster was designed and built by commercial sculptor A.J. Strasser of Fairfax, Virginia. Building the 35-foot-long Fiberglas crustacean consumed 2,000 hours over six years. "On the road Art delights," Strasser says. "People laugh and grab their friends who laugh, too. These days I use Art as a calling card at meetings with clients. He brings me jobs and considerable press. Although I recognized the commercial potential, I built Art for art's sake."
-
Having read the text I think it can be called an ad-mobile, too:
These days I use Art as a calling card at meetings with clients. He brings me jobs and considerable press.
Thank you!
-
Yep, the vehicle we saw does appear to be Art the Lobster (with added wheel covers). Not sure what he was doing in the parking lot of a church in Sarasota, Florida, but there he was!

An illustration for a 1929 Ferodo advertising vehicle with a Sphinx.

So it was built to advertise headlamps but doesn’t appear to have been fitted with any itself? (unless they are behind the front glass)
That is one large blind spot when turning…

The most basic form of car advertising, seen in 1957 in Berlin for the Eden-Saloon, the first night club of the famous Berlin playboy Rolf Eden.
-
Rolf Eden died last year - what an interesting guy - what a life...
When Rolf Eden read in the newspaper in 1956 that every Berliner living abroad (he lived in pais at that time) who returned to West Berlin would receive 6,000 marks (about 17,000 euros in today's purchasing power), he traveled to Berlin.
At the beginning of his time in Berlin, Eden waited for the promised money and initially worked briefly as a vacuum cleaner salesman and as a night porter and bartender in a U.S. barracks. With the welcome money that was finally paid out, Eden initially opened the Eden Saloon on the corner of Nestorstraße and Kurfürstendamm in 1957.
The photo thus shows his first advertising measure after his return to Germany and quasi the start of his career.
