What we look like
« on: February 12, 2012, 04:32:14 AM »
An idea from another Forum might be worth a try.
There are a lot of us who have been posting on here for so long that we feel we know each other, but even those who post under easily understood names wouldn't be recognised if we passed each other in the street, museum, paddock, auction room or bar so how about using this thread to post a normal photo so we can see what we look like?
There's a rather small on of me to the left of this (and it appears in larger form somewhere else) but if this takes off I'll find another.

Do I detect a certain reluctance, Allan? OK, I'll be the first.

Pictured earlier today, this is my current daily driver. I've long been fascinated by microcars, but at last I think this is one I can live with. :)

I'll find another one without the wiskers.
I have the wiskers about 6 months a year.

Wings and all light are off the car at the moment, doing a repaint, the prep was rushed on the 2010 rebuild
35 years in boxes and excitment took over.

Can I play even tho I'm a fng?  (That acronym isn't "family rated, so you can google it for a definition.) Hope so.  Here's me last September.  I know.  Doesn't really show me clearly.  But the avatar is a photo of me from last August.  Only difference is that the beard is longer now.

I wish I could say that I ran the car to warp speed, but it was its first time on the Bonneville Salt Flats and on the first WOT (Wide Open Throttle) pass, the rear end's pinion yoke snapped (one of the few stock parts in the drive train) when I shifted into 4th at a GPS-indicated 137 mph and that allowed the drive shaft (I had a front safety loop on it, but not a rear one...that'll be changed before it runs again) to try to get into the driver's seat with me.  It didn't make it, but it punched a buncha holes in the floor pan.  Bummer.  Anyway, when that happened, it broke a whole lotta stuff, the worst part being the transmission.  That had been a brand-new race-built trans with less than 5 miles on it.

For those who aren't familiar with the car, it's a 1985 Chevy Monte Carlo Super Sport (maybe that would have made a good puzzle) with a 406 cubic inch V8 (6.7L) that a computer simulation said should produce 550 hp.  I'll say 500, because I never got a chance to fine-tune it.

Spring has just barely arrived (I hope it stays around for a while) and that means I can go back to work on it.  I haven't done any work on it since I took it off the trailer and put it in my garage.  I have a lotta work to do before September when I hope to race it again.  The goal for this year is 2 runs between 130 and 140 (it's already gone that fast...and in 3rd gear only...if I'd only known.....) and then I'll hand it to my racing partner and let him try for the same speed goal.  The following year (assuming all goes well) some modifications will be made and then the goal will be 160.  We'll see after that.

Thanks for letting me bend your metaphorical ears and eyes.  I dunno if a link is allowed here or not, so I'll just mention that my personal website that I've run for 15 years is in my profile, and the car and its story can be found in the "Projects" section.

I don't actually have a photo of myself in digital format, but I wouldn't want to frighten small children anyway. I'm not camera-shy (even when the cameras make audible protestations ) and I'll post something as and when it's available.

I'm very hard pushed to find a picture of me, but here's an old one I have on my computer with a friend and Trevor Wilkinson, founder of TVR and from whose forename the company name came of course (TreVoR).
I'm the one on the far right, but that was before I lost every bit of my hair!

Neither did I!
I did say it was a bit old; to be honest I don't think there is a newer one of me except in my passport!
I remember crossing the border between Germany and Holland not longer after I lost all my hair and the border official kept looking at the photo then at me until he asked "Is this really you?!"

This is me driving a rather lovely Ferrari 250 SWB at Goodwood earlier this year.  A few moments after this photo was taken, I tried out a Ferrari Daytona, which drove like a truck and was a huge disappointment compared to this SWB.  Despite my admiration of Pininfarina, I've never been a big fan of the Daytona, and driving one has now put me off the car for life.  I'm not sorry, as that has saved me $1 million  ;)!

I tell a lie!
I've remembered a few were taken earlier this year at a venue some will be very familiar with...!
I'm the one standing on the left in what Erin Baker writing in the Robb Report described as a battered cricket hat...!

Wow - you don't need an assistant do you?!
Everything I've ever read about the Daytona says exactly the same thing, but they all go on to say that once you get it over 90/100 mph it completely transforms and becomes smooth and refined, with beautiful steering and handling.
I don't know where you're supposed to do that kind of speed, mind, unless you happen to live near an unrestricted autobahn..
Track days I suppose.
