Title: Do Dreams Die Hard?
Post by: Otto Puzzell on November 17, 2006, 05:38:02 AM
"What’re you youngn's up to?!"

That was the most common inquiry from my friend Mark's dad, as we'd get into one mess or another. And we’d either take on the lamb, if he hadn’t yet spotted us, or we’d hang our heads in disappointment if he had. It was the early 1970's, and the world was changing fast....

Nice read, Karn.  You did yourself proud with this one.

Thank you, that's very kind. I'm surrounded by some very adept wordsmiths here, and was nervous about writing something anecdotal.

Very well done, KU! Brought back a few basement slot car memories of my own.

I also read this one, after "The junk". Maybe I should read all those stories in "Featured Articles" before going further, but something came to me.

Some time ago in Brussels, I've bought a book called "True tales of american life" edited by Paul Auster. It came from a project in which a National Public Radio suggested to its listeners that they send stories they had to tell. It's a wonderful book, with fine writing by people who are not writers. I later bought a french translation for my wife to read.

It struck me as Karn's an P-head's pieces were like true short stories (that typical american genre). If we had more like these, don't you believe it could make a nice little book of auto-related memories and nostalgia?

What do you say, Editors and Autopuzzlers?

I kept reading some of the posts in Featured Articles, and if it's true that not much would fit my idea, which short stories and not articles, I'll point at those who can.

So, like Karn's http://www.autopuzzles.com/cfeature13.htm
Like P-head's http://www.autopuzzles.com/cfeature8.htm
and http://www.autopuzzles.com/afeature2.htm
Like MG's http://www.autopuzzles.com/cfeature22.htm
Like Rich's http://www.autopuzzles.com/afeature4.htm
and http://www.autopuzzles.com/cfeature7.htm
and http://www.autopuzzles.com/afeature12.htm
and http://www.autopuzzles.com/forum/index.php?topic=505.0
Knightfan's http://www.autopuzzles.com/forum/index.php?topic=10125.0
Maybe (it's more of an article) Allan's  http://www.autopuzzles.com/cfeature29.htm
Piersdad's http://www.autopuzzles.com/forum/index.php?topic=8650.0

Well, it's a start.

I'm hyper-critical of my own work, but really enjoyed the other articles you listed. Would people pay to read them? I really don't know.
