Carnut will love that 'plate. Should be black on white unless the truck was built in 1973.

No, the black on white/yellow requirement has never applied to commercial vehicles or buses!
Also they've recently changed the law which stipulated all cars registered from May 1973 onwards had to have the new plates.  Now I believe it's all cars registered in the last 40 years.  So if you have a 1976 MGB, for instance, you can put black plates with white lettering on it.
I don't remember seeing any publicity about it but that's the rule now.

I like your anorak  ;D. I'm a bit of a pedant on certain matters - on reflection I think I DID know about the 40 year ruling, but I'd conveniently forgotten about it in my urgent need to satisfy my addiction to petty matters.

It's a bit of a silly rule IMO. It allows cars to have a black-and-white plate when it wouldn't have been fitted in period. Bonkers.

(I'm the sort of person who ruins the film for everyone in the cinema by pointing out that something that has just happened could never have occurred, and why. Can't help myself........)

I fully agree.
It just looks wrong when you see a B&W 'P' plate on a 1976 car, as it has never been legal until now.
It looks just as wrong as those horrible "age-related" plates that the DVLA like issuing, which look to us anoraks exactly like replacement plates for ones which have been nicked and sold on at an astronomical price, thereby totally ruining the originality of the car they came off...
It seems most car nuts aren't bothered about plates.  I frequently see veteran cars with modern reflective plates.. Who would do such a thing?
