Someone else buy this!
This is the thread where you post those tempting finds from autotrader, ebay, craigslist, racingjunk.com, prewarcar.com, a local paper, or what have you. The goal is to bully your fellow AP'rs into needless purchases. Million dollar supercars, restored classics, weekend-sucking project cars, automobilia, and random parts & unnecessary garage tools all welcome. A quick picture, a link, and two or three sentences justifying why SOMEONE ELSE should buy it are all that's needed.
When you post your temptation, include a lame-ass excuse as to why you're not buying the item in the post above yours.
To start:
A 426 Wedge-powered Dodge Dart.
http://racingjunk.com/post/758876/1968-Dodge-Dart-GTS-H-Code-426-Wedge.html
The engine is orange. It'll lay black strips until the cows come home. And you won't see yourself on every street corner. You can't afford not to buy this.
If I hadn't just bought some stuff I'd be all over this. Five vehicles would be pushing my luck though. This is a manly man's SUV - they have a good reputation for being tough, long lasting unlike the fwd Lada cars like the Samara.
1995 Lada Niva (http://usedcalgary.com/classified-ad/2186959&category=suvs)
That's the nicest Lada Niva I've seen. I'd buy it, but:
1) Won't be street legal down here in the states
2) I'd have flashbacks to taking my father's honda CVCC off-road :)
So...instead, someone needs to buy this:
Porsche 356 project car
http://tinyurl.com/y8ehr5
It's got all the tossability of a Miata ...with blown shocks... and all-season tires...on a gravel road....without all of the soulless reliability. The body can be inverted and used for bathing. And weekends are overrated.
Amazing the price a (big) project car can go for!
Very rare Jowett Jupiter - needs a little work too ;)
http://cgi.ebay.ca/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=170050513956&ssPageName=STRK:MEWA:IT&ih=007
(http://i16.ebayimg.com/02/i/000/78/58/1d07_1.JPG)
Yikes. I'd buy the Jupiter, but my wife has a Saturn, and I have a 1 planet-named car limit.
Anyone need a parts-getter?
Runs and drives (both!) for only $850. That's less than 3 bucks a cube!
http://washingtondc.craigslist.org/mld/car/238542511.html
Just parts getter truck - hopefully one will suffice.
This car isn't named after a planet but you'll need to move to Canada to get it. Modern day Austin Healey Sprite.
http://www.importconcern.ca/stock/100246/
(http://www.importconcern.ca/stock/100246/20t.jpg)
I'd buy that Honda Beat, but I'd rather just weld a Del Sol front clip to the back half of an MR2 Spyder...it'd look just the same, but I'd have twin engined AWD goodness!
INSTEAD, someone needs to buy this hemi + transmission for their project car:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/06-Magnum-Hemi-SRT-8-Engine-Motor-6-1-4k-SRT8-Charger_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQcategoryZ33615QQihZ020QQitemZ300053494250QQrdZ1
1) It's a Hemi.
2) It only has 4000 miles on it. Anyone who totals a new car in 4000 miles probably drove it very gently.
3) It comes with the shifter linkage and pedal assembly, so there's at least a slim chance of actually getting it to run, despite all the computerized nonsense.
Here is something for your Hemi to go into ;D

I actually have a soft spot for 4th-gen F Bodies (in fact, I spent most of yesterday afternoon underneath one), but this poor bastard is about to learn that money "invested" into a project car isn't coming back in the form of resale value.
A Mopar project car is tempting....but the sun god RA commands you to buy this:

It took GM too long to answer the Mustang with the Camaro and Firebird. That it took 6 years to reply to the AMC Marlin doomed the boat-tail Riviera to the status of also-ran.

Hi. This started out as a 97 Plymouth Grand Voyager. What it is now is kinda hard to explain :) Hopefully pictures speak for themselves. No, I didn't do any of the work and don't know who or what was done, again, hopefully pictures are adequate. 3.0 V6, auto, runs decent, shifts fine, puffs some smoke at start up, rides like a buckboard. switch on dash to raise and lower rear suspension. Appears to have windshield frame cut down. No windshield, no wipers, no rear seats, no cupholders, no warranty and no, I wouldn't recommend driving it home :) Tires rub. Clean AZ title. $100 nonrefundable deposit. If you get here and it wasn't as described then you don't have to complete purchase. AZ residents will have to pay 6.1 % sales tax. This is a project!! Please don't expect more than what you see, although again, it does run and drive. Someone put a tremendous amount of effort in this cruiser. Let your imagination take it to the next level! Thank you for looking!! Brian

WHY NOT, is all I can say.
Well, an M3 is just an M3. But anybody that's running a Star or a Lea-Francis or a D-type replica... well, that's another league altogether. The M3 is a terrific car, but some of us are running history... and you can't compete with that. In fact, I don't want to compete, I'd much rather go for a drive and sit agog as I listened to the sounds of a straight 6 Jag at full chat. Or a Duhc.
If somebody would want a turn behind the wheel of a humble M3, I would be more than honored.
Good company we have here. Remarkable, in fact.

Likewise, I think I'd prefer a turn behind the wheel of an M3 than one of the more historics. I'd be too afraid of stuffing them into a corner to really enjoy it them way they were meant to be driven.
The most personally tempting of all the finds thus far was a Bizzarrini hill climb car from a while back. It had chevy small block mechanicals and maybe 6 additional moving parts. I'd looked like it was actually serviceable, and of no great historic import, so it could have been driven with comparative abandon. The bidding soared beyond my indulgence limit all too quickly, though.

Nothing like a little (or big) Detroit iron under the hood of lightweight (or heavy) European body. Just needs a little (or a lot) of TLC. And parts are as close as your nearest neighborhood junkyard that happens to have another interceptor in it that hasn't been picked clean of the part (or parts) you need!
I love Jensen Interceptors. Almost bought a MkII years and years ago. Gone by the time I had a garage and money together. Went with a much more sensable Triumph Spitfire instead. Interceptors are fantastic rusters and cost a fortune to restore. Combine that with relatively low values when done its probably a best bet to buy one that is done up already. One day I might still. Of course knowing me I'll buy the basketcase.

Where you been, P-Head? Inquiring minds want to know! ;D
That would be the second VW van I've passed on this month, but my resistance is starting to give. What better transport for a 3 month road trip to every national park in the American Southwest?
For now, though, I have something else in mind. Bear with me for this eloquently worded tale of former racing glory:
In about 1970, it is carried by McLaren of a racing car, and it is an engine imported by Japan.
this is one of a small number of blocks cast in 1968 for the CANAM series by Chevrolet and refered to as SIDE OILERS due to the passage along the drivers side of the block. As for this block which is prototype, there are not a date code, a casting code. Shipping is only a boat.
Here that, APers?! Shipping is ONLY A BOAT. That's a friggin' bargain for an aluminum block SBC of completely unverifiable providence...especially if the deal includes the old copy of Motor Trend as pictured!

Mclaren of a racing car. :lmao:
Would make a hell of a place to store all your old pistons laying around in the garage, S&M! Either that, or a step stool for those hard to reach shelves in the kitchen! ::)

I'm having second thoughts about this particular specimen. Look closely at the cylinder liners. Is it just me, but do they appear to be:
1) A bit more robust than standard fare, and more importantly,
2) Machined for a little extra clearance around the perimeter in roughly the area one might want some valve relief on a big block Chevy?
Maybe it's just the lighting, but I'm thinking there might be some truth to the story behind this. Who's the resident ZL-1 / Can-Am big block expert?
Stephen M - step up and take this six wheeler dune buggy for a 3 month road trip! Think of the tire rotation opportunities!

In the meantime, someone who shall remain nameless should jump on this:

*drool* That's the nicest T2 I've ever seen... and I've seen some damn nice ones.
Still, I don't think I could ever own it. The problem with time capsule cars is they depreciate dramatically the moment you take them out of the garage.

Well it has Blazer doors and apparently some Bronco body parts with a school bus engine/tranny. And I'll guess its bus chassis and wheels as well. Titled as a 1971 Bronco ... that would cause a few raised eyebrows at the safety inspection.
Time to trade in that ass-engined nazi camper van on a GEN-U-INE all american diesel 4x4 conversion van! I LOVE IT when a plan comes together!

I've been lusting after a rig like that ever since I got to drive Quigley 4x4-converted E350s in Colorado. With the Powerstroke, it still ought to be good for 18-20 mpg which is what my Westy got on a good day.
Sure, that cute little quigley van above may be just the thing for you.... if you like to wear pink, dot your "I"s with hearts, and make friendship necklaces out of buttercups.

Quote
This is one nasty, rusted demon of $%$%$^#@#@#@ car that I have had the misery of calling my own since approximately 1991. I thought it would be pretty cool to own a Maserati, and for a while, I must admit, it was. Back in the early days, I had tremendous fun racing up and down the highway, and the sensation of being thrown back in the seat by the twin turbo's. That lasted about a year or so, and then I decided to redo the body, and overhaul the engine. That's when I met my first Maserati Mechanic. I should have known by his expensive Italian wardrobe that I was into some serious fun. In around 1994 I had the body redone (all sheet metal) and the engine overhauled. Then the electrical system started to develop a personality all it's own...think Linda Blair in the Exorcist. Turning on the headlights would trigger the windshield wipers! Sounding the air horn would activate the hazard lights! Ocassionally, there would be a complete system shut down, usually on a desolate stretch of roadway, or in the middle of a snowstorm. It was during these times that I came to appreciate the luxurious interior of the car, and spent many hours enjoying the opulance of the leather and wood trim, while admiring the view behind the latest tow truck!
But I digress in memory. To the present! The ugly miserable rust bucket has not been driven in approximately 10 years. The muffler has rusted completely away, and the rear bumper has fallen off. There are numerous lovely areas where a light poke with a drinking straw will penetrate the surface.
To be fair, the engine is likely in reasonably good condition (the engine was never really an issue). The interior is reasonable, with some assorted age tears in the front seats and a sagging headliner. There are probably a bunch of good parts to salvage or scavenge or what have you, or if you are a complete fool, you can try to restore it! I guarantee, you will need lots of money and an IQ around 30 to attempt this job.
I am starting this auction at $1.00. I offer no warranty whatsoever, other than a general guarantee that whoever is brave or foolish enough to buy this freakish eyesore will get their fill of heartache.
You want it, you arrange shipping.
DO NOT ASK ME TO TAKE OFF INDIVIDUAL PARTS AND SELL THEM TO YOU. I AM NOT A MECHANIC, JUST A GUY WHO FELL IN LOVE WITH AN IDEA. I WILL EITHER SELL THIS THING, OR HAVE IT TOWED TO THE WRECKERS AND POP A CHAMPAGNE CORK AS IT IS SQUISHED INTO A SMALL RUSTY METAL CUBE.
'Nuff said.

Psssst. GM. A car you built 20 years ago, albeit selling "as-new", is apparently worth more than anything you build today. :P

Eight cylinders and six speeds seldom make for a boring car.
Counter examples welcome :D
I'd buy that Audi V8 + tranny, but hanging the entire engine forward of the front axle is something only a crazed Audi-phile (or subaru fan) would do. Instead, a more technically sound approach would be to set the engine further back and use a prop shaft to send power forward to.......OOH! SHINY THING!

Those Audi motors while being hopelessly placed in a fwd car make a nice layout for a mid engined machine. Say take this Puma and rip out the VW engine thing and toss in that Audi motor. here is an odd one. Studebaker Champion on a 4x4 Dodge D50 chassis, engine and dash! You can see the front wheel doesn't quite line up right. The Dash looks out of place. There was a Austin A40 with Dodge Colt (rwd kind) drivetrain and dash for sale recently - I wonder if they shared a common builder.
http://www.saskantiques.com/Aother.html (half way down page)
The same page lists a Pacer, a Gremlin, and a VW Bug with a seized engine. Clearly the Studebaker-Dodge one-off is the pick of the litter...box. :)
I must admit I'm a bit disappointed by the lack of autopuzzles purchases resulting from this thread. There's a lot of high quality automotive flotsam and jetsam here, people. Open those checkbooks. Give 'till it hurts. Operators are standing by.
And, as a special incentive, the next buyer of any one of the fine pieces of autmobilia featured in this thread may opt to receive, at absolutely full cost to them, their choice of either one of the following two service vehicles:

Who else could utter such magnificent words and make it sound like he meant it? Nobody other than John Travolta. Here is a car that has all the depth, meaning, class, and worth of the quote above. It's the Barris-built Travolta Fevah Pontiac Firebird, in all its bewinged, box-fendered and saddled glory. Think back to the late 70's when driving a car like this meant that you would get the ever-lovin' crap kicked outta you on a weekly basis. Now you can own this car and earn the respect that once escaped you. People will no longer laugh in your face, point at your ridiculous mustache or sneer at your pimplicious clothes. Instead they will all recoil in horror and take a step backwards as they realize that they are dealing with a deranged feral psychopath capable of anything.
It ain't great respect, but it's better than nothing.

Endlessly fasinated with them also, probably from their plain unadorned bodies which were ridiculously low. simply stunning cars and one on my short list. My father in law had a coupe and my mother in law cried when the car was sold. I'd love to own one.
I liked the '61 the best. Ford's 'improvements' to this car over the ensuing years diluted its true beauty.

Then again, I'm of the belief that all truly great cars should occasionally demonstrate their hatred of you. :)
In that case I've owned more "great cars" than one can count with all digits exposed. I hate to say this, but the one that hated me the most was a 78 Ford Fairmont wagon that I bought new as a tow car for the Sprite. I also used it as a daily driver and before it was a year old, it had been in the shop 11 times, 8 of those times arriving on the hook. I finally traded my wife for her 70 VW. Funny, it musta liked her a lot better, cuz it never went 'back to the womb' after that.
Then there was an 87 Monte Carlo SS Aerocoupe that seemed to have vampiristic tendencies. It had never-ending problems with the instrument cluster and every time I'd do an r&r on it, I'd end up bleeding from both hands. Fortunately, I sold it for twice what I paid for it (the seller believed it had a flat cam....it was a broken vacuum line) after replacing the plastic nose and a couple of minor things.
Some others that hated me: 76 Honda Accord, 65 Sunbeam Alpine (the Prince of Darkness definitely had a grasp on that one), 58 Opel Rekord Kombi (ate transmissions for breakfast), 63 Peugeot 404 (I out that one on its head) and a 68 Nova that my youngest son and I built together. He finally killed it by driving it with very little coolant until the needle of the temp gauge snapped off. It was a little hot. Took out both heads and the block...it was a mild 355 V8.
I think my current "economy car" (88 Camaro V6) has a passive-resistive dislike for me, but for the moment, I think I have it under control...I think.
It runs. It's only a grand. What the heck else do you want?

Someone should snatch this one before it's declared a health hazard and demolished. I mean, how many survivors can there be from a high-speed crash involving a 1962 International-Harvester pickup and a Pontiac Grand-Am of uncertain parentage can there be? It's a once-in-a-lifetime chance!

Yike. I don't know where to start.
And apparently someone else didn't know when to stop :)
I dare say the ravages of time and the elements can't diminish the beauty of a classic as fast as a motivated owner.
Speaking of which:

Pink-ish Cadillac. Some lights work. (How many do you need?). You can hose it out and sleep in it.

This is sick and wrong! It's advertised as a "1957 Nomad." I hate to pop their balloon, but it's a 1992 (or thereabouts) Caprice or Impala that's had some unsuccessful plastic surgery. The twin hood spears and side trim can't keep it from being what it really is: a real dog. The real sad part is that it's for sale for $20k. I think somebody added a zero by mistake...or felonious intent.

The same type of people who create something like that, would turn an '89 Caprice into an El Camino, with about the same resale value:
Yeah. If we put 'em both together (and could chase down buyers for 'em) we could both have a cup of coffee at Starbucks. :)

I see a lot of Mopar/SRT in that front end treatment. I can't decide if that's faint praise; and if so, on who it should fall.
While I'm figuring that out, put a bid down on this beaut:

V12 caddy caught halfway to a full resto or a rat rod. Your call.
