You need a passport to visit Canada now?

Dunno...will have to check it out.  I know I needed one a couple years back when I attended a conference in Montreal.  The funny thing I remember about that was that I waited forever to get cleared to enter Canada (following a clear search of every inch of my carry-on luggage and an electronic frisk) but it took me around ten minutes and quick wave-through to come back into the States.  Homeland Security anyone? :-\

Entering Canada, you are an alien.

Entering the U.S., you are a citizen.

In between, you're a tourist...

Tourists in Northern Michigan are called Fudgies in honor of the Mackinac fudge trade.

I just remember driving w/ my folks to Winnipeg from NoDak and there being NO ONE at the border crossing.

Times change.

There isn't any need for anyone to be there.  Nice to know that at one point we understood as much.

I think  January 1st was the phase-in for the new passport rules, but they keep getting pushed back so who knows. I do know that last year, having a passport greatly streamlined the process... we'd cross the border just to get to the duty free shop.

My experience at the border crossing near Glacier (port of Piegan) was that the Canadian guards are friendly and professional, whereas the US Customs goons made me feel like a criminal for trying to re-enter my own country.

Ultra

I will check into it before our trip.
