The cornerstone is laid for a presidential residence in the newly designated capital city of Washington. Contrary to the urban legend, Washington was not built on a reclaimed swamp (though wetlands did cover areas along the city's rivers and streams).

Today, of course, the capital's status as swamp is seldom questioned. ;)
