I'm not sure I get the joke, but note that the cartoon is by Charles Addams (1912-1988) of "Addams Family" fame.
"May I submit 'Utopian Turtletop'? Do not trouble to answer unless you like it."
-- Marianne Moore, suggesting a name for what would become the Edsel

I found it in a pre-war mgazine. No idea about the deeper meaning of the joke. I just thought it was a funny idea to drive around the Indianapolis oval in a caravan.
Thanks for your background informations.

Well it reminds me of a dream l had a few months ago.
in dream l'm a visitor to USSR and someone invite me to go into a huge sedan in size of Fleetwood
Funny point is the front passenger seat doesn't have seat , but there's a set of tiny kitchen thing like oven , water sink and small fridge ,  etc
(this is a SEDAN)
so if USSR continues to 2020s, they will have strong enough indutstry to build big sedan but can't have enough restrurant on the roads...
some kind of joke too.

The point of the joke is probably that the Duesenbergs were so good and winning was so easy they could tow a caravan so provide food and drink for the driver and still win!

In the Michael Schumacher days we used to joke that he could stop for a cup of coffee and biscuits in the middle of a GP and still win..!

We slightly older folk said much the same about Mike Hawthorn and a pint of beer. . .
Opinionated but sometimes wrong
