It's the 1962 Lolette-Chevrolet from South Africa built by Eric Brockhoven, who also built VW based Lolettes.

'The first racing Lolette had a chassis designed by John Meyers and was essentially the same as the Protea – a very rigid tubular space frame. Front suspension was firstly Ford perfect, chopped and then Jaguar based with discs. Gearbox was Alfa with a differential of Eric's own design all connected to a big horse 4.7 litre Chev Corvette engine. Initially the car was an open sports racer and looked quite attractive.'

in 1964 it grew a roof, a rather ugly front and amazingly came to the UK to race. It still exists, was rebuilt back to 62 spec, and was for sale last year.
It now looks like this:

That's the answer, and the point is yours. You've said just about all we need to know.

The open car has been a previous puzzle, but it looks so different as a coupe that I thought I'd use the car again. It raced at Goodwood in period - maybe Djetset could invite the owner over to take part in the big-banger race.

I also spot 2 GSM's in the background

Indeed - I think that's why carnut suggested it was SA.

That's right.
And I knew I knew the puzzle car but I just couldn't recall the name and the picture is on my other computer (not at home!)
