As a heads-up, the current Lock to Wendax will remain for another 24 hours.

Wendax

I guess it is the R3G, but I couldn't find any nickname.

You've got the three correct characters, but not in the correct order. I will extend the Lock for a further 36 hours as the nickname should then be easier to find.

So it is GR3 then?
No, still the wrong order! Still Locked.
A car is for life, not just for Christmas.

Wendax

RG3 and a nickname containing Archie?

Djetset

RG3 is correct but the nickname isn't. Now that you've got the correct model name, finding its (logical) nickname should become much easier, so the Lock remains.

Wendax

Djetset

No, although the nickname does use part of the name of this prototype's inspiration.

Rover something?
No, it's the other part of that name, with another word added too!
A car is for life, not just for Christmas.

Wendax

Land crab? (I'm lost.)

Land crab? (I'm lost.)
No, but it's Land something (spoon feeding you the second word which is quite logical). The Lock remains.

Land Ferguson?
Wow, you are soooo close  ;). Have another go at the second part...

Land Harry?
No, not Harry but more directly related to  Ferguson.

Wendax

Djetset

No, one more try, but stick with an abbreviation of Ferguson.

Land Fergie?
Bingo! To give this prototype it's full title, it's the Ferguson RG3 'Land Fergie'. Your 2150th point for getting the RG3 and Land Fergie elements. Well done.

The story takes quite a bit of unearthing, but this is what I have (except it doesn't quite seem to tie in with your information...):

The first two R3 chassis, R3A and R3B, never seem to have received individual bodies, but in 1955 they were amalgamated into one chassis and given a rudimentary mule body (pictured below but not quite the one in your puzzle picture – the front end and wheelarches are different) and registered OWK 21.
R3D was prepared as a show chassis but doesn't seem to have ever received a body.
Chassis R3A/B eventually morphed into R3G (not RG3 according to my info), along with a development of the mule body in my picture and the same registration number, OWK 21; that must be your puzzle picture, but I can't see anything about a nickname for it.
R3A-B/R3G's registration number, OWK 21, was eventually re-allocated to one of the first Michelotti Ferguson estate cars, R5/1, which was nicknamed the Bread Van.

I haven't been able to find any other nicknames for any of the Ferguson cars after the Crab, but after your clues I was going to guess 'Land Ferger (or Fergie/Fergy)' (and note I'm writing this on Saturday whilst the puzzle is locked for Wendax but I'm guessing he will soon be solving it!)

Thanks for the additional information Carnut.

The RG3 information (including the Puzzle image and 'Land Fergie' nickname) came from the excellent 'Traction For Sale' book by Bill Munro that was published last year about the history of Ferguson Formula, with a section on the  RG3, plus a couple of other photos which I will try and upload later.

Yes, I figured that's where your picture and information came from, but unfortunately I don't have it.

However, below is an extract of the Ferguson article I got my information from, written by ....Bill Munro!

Oddly he didn't mention the 'Land Fergie' nickname in the article and as you can see he refers to it as the R3G, which is logical when its predecessors were R3A, R3B, R3C, R3D, R3E and R3F.

Does he refer to RG3 a number of times or is it possible it's a typo?

Yes, RG3 is mentioned numerous times, including photo captions.
