A Renault engine?

Oophs, great minds think alike! I'll change my question to a Peugeot engine (?), although I think a Renault unit is more likely.

By sort of, could you mean a Panhard 'tuner' such as a Deutsch-Bonnet?

My fertile imagination had me thinking a homebuilt flat-4 made from cut and shut Panhard twinnies!

Is it rear-engined?

It is, although the engine was not in the car when the puzzle photo was taken.

No, it was powered by a DB Panhard motor, but the car itself was built and raced in the U.S.
