Do you know if the Chinese company that made this car still exists?
the company does not, but its 3-letter code is still around
FAW?
no
An unconfident question. Was it made by Youngman?
no
JAC?
no
This could possibly be the ultimate Auto Puzzles car puzzle, as this vehicle is just so bland and anonymous, it could be based around one of any number of instantly forgettable Asian-produced mid-sized sedans of the 1980s and 90s, made by Daewoo, Hyundai, Daihatsu, Proton and so on...
So, as a wild guess (although it looks a little too large), could this be a Ling Kong KJ6380?
no
think of an animal. A big animal
Is that big animal something mythical like a Dragon, or an actual living creature?
An orthographically questionable yak: JAC?

Sorry Wendax, it's not up to the Masters section as yet, although I suspect it will be quite soon at this rate :)

Oops! :bag:
Don't worry, it takes a while to get used to the new AP system, and we are all currently living through stressful times :)

To be clear, the three letter code is currently being used by another (automobile?) company and spells out the name of a large animal?
No
The original brand name of this car translated as a big animal.
As always there's a 3-letter code of the manufacturer, which survives until the present day as the company switched owners many times and now exists under another name.
Does the animal name relate to a bear?
no
Name related to an elephant?
no
Related to a rhino?
Jingyu?
not related to a Jingyu
not a rhino
Horse-related?
no
Giraffe related?
Elk/Mílù?
neither giraffe nor elk
Shark related?
Dinossaur?
Moose?
Djetset is closest so I locked it for him. It is not a shark though
Thank you for the Lock Pal. I'm still struggling with this one (and to find an aquatic name), but was this made by Jiangnan?
no, not Jiangnan. The brand name is the animal.
Jiangnan is related to a whale. It's not a Hawk CC6470 is it, associated to Great Wall?
no
So the name is related more to a marine creature?
yes
Dolphin?
yes, the lock is 10 days old so it'd have expired, but in theory it belong to Djetset. Anyhow, not a Dolphin. Djetset, should I unlock?
Yes, fine to unlock thanks as I've got nowhere with this one, but I appreciate you holding it for a while Pal.
okay, unlocked
Whale is correct, but the Chinese name was not Jingyu and there is the little matter of the model name. So locked for you to sort this out
That's why I mentioned Jiangnan in a previous post as it relates to the Chinese word for whale.

Was the Chinese name Lán Jīng (blue whale)?
The Chinese word got nothing to do with whale at all. Whale was used because it was easier to pronounce.
You would think this might be easy for me, considering 1) I'm the only member of my household who does not speak Mandarin and 2) as a family, we have far more relatives living in China than in the US. Alas, they are not 'car people' and so none of them have ever heard of this automotive cetacean.
I doubt I'll be solving this one soon, so please unlock.
Any GAC connection?
unlocked an no GAC connection
a logical internet search would give you the solution.
I've tried both logical and illogical internet searches but come up with nothing so far, so a different approach...
Is this incredibly bland car based around an equally anonymous sedan from Japan?
1995-96 Wei'er (Whale) WHJ6440
see :)
This became the Kayi sub-brand of Chery
Golly, so that's what is was! Well done again for posting one of the most anonymous cars ever to appear here on AP :D.
A few further questions about this dull machine if I may as it intrigues me. So, I guess the three-letter 'code' name you referred to was WHJ (?). Does this still exist today in a current Chery model, as I can't find anything. Also, to my earlier question, do you know what existing car this was based around? I'm assuming it was something equally dull and forgettable such as a Toyota Corolla or Nissan Sunny/Sentra. Thanks.
According to a nice forum on Chinese cars, in 2015: "NDRC Notice #271 lists a new vehicle WHJ6440 which I find is nothing but a Kaiyi (Cowin) branded version of the extended-length Karry Youyou (SQR6440K06)"
The Wei'er (Whale) was produced by the People's Liberation Army No 5720 Works in Wuhu City
The sedan was probably based on a Toyota Corolla
Thank you for the extra information Pal ;)
