I tried to move my Puzzle 8 to Solved Puzzles, and something didn't work.
Could also not give Grobmotorix his point.
I also have my Puzzle 4 floating around (solved by Karn)

Puzzle 4:
http://www.autopuzzles.com/forum/index.php?topic=1366.msg12307#msg12307
Your puzzle 8 was properly moved, by you, to the Solved puzzles section. It is about halfway down page one. If you would uncheck the box asking if you want to leave a referring link next time you move a thread, it would really help out. Thanks.
:)
I will look into the point thing right now.

I tested it. You can now award points for Solved Puzzles.
;) ;D 8)
Pieter, I awarded a point to Grobmotorix as well.

A different kind of error........
When I tried to post a reply a few minutes ago, I got a message "server is too busy to show web page", so I back clicked, waited a couple and hit post again, and it went thru fine. Any thoughts (besides the obvious)?

GoDaddy was responsible for that.
Thanks for sticking with us through problems like that one.

Pretty much what I thought............no worries then..........

I have only had that happen to me twice in the year this board has been here. If it happens to you again, let me know.

It was a first for me, glad I had the presense of mind to just wait for it and not lose my "valuable" post ;D

It seems the go-daddy team has turned the rheostat to "molasses" again. :(

I spoke to them about it today. Nothing resolved. When our latest period of service approaches expiration, I will be looking to change providers.

We've been pretty happy with "1 and 1", speed stays consistent and don't seem to have posting problems of any sort, FWIW.

I've been happy with 1and1 too. I just set up a simplemachines forum there and performance has been very consistent. If you go with them, wanna use me as a reference? http://www.1and1.com/?k_id=14871030
Jagman, since you mentioned it first, you should get the affiliate credit. If you take a pass, and Autopuzzles goes with 1and1, I'd love to get the referral.

Actually, I believed I PM'd him about 1&1 prior to anyone posting it here. :P
-
FWIW, personal experience notwithstanding, the last link I posted points to empirical evidence of 1 & 1 not being such a bastion of up-time.
-
Hey, I like it, but then I'm not a bastion of up-time either. ;)
I've had great service through them, but it ain't my call. And if Graywolf recommended it before moi and wants the referral, by all means, it's his. I just asked. I'm certainly not adament about it.

On a somewhat related note, this afternoon I noticed that AutoPuzzles is now blocked by websense. That will cut down on my lunch hour browsing. Might be worth looking into. I checked websense's sight but there wasn't any obvious place to search for a list of blocked sites and/or the reason they're on the blacklist.

Maybe your admins noticed your patterns...Was still working at my office when I left today.

Not working this AM!!! Has something changed in the MetaTag or something? It is blocked as "Proxy Avoidance"...

Can you name other sites that websense block at your workplace? Are any of them automotive or puzzle and game sites?

It is blocked as "Proxy Avoidance"...
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Websense
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Proxy_Avoidance
At schools and offices
Many work places and schools are cracking down on the websites and online services that are made available in their buildings. Websites like Myspace, Addictinggames, Runescape and even circumventors to bypass censors in computers and other illegal social websites have become targets of mass banning.
Proxy Web server creators have become more clever allowing users to encrypt links, and any data going to and from other web servers. This allows users to access websites that would otherwise have been blocked.
A special case of web proxies are "CGI proxies." These are web sites that allow a user to access a site through them. They generally use PHP or CGI to implement the proxying functionality. CGI proxies are frequently used to gain access to web sites blocked by corporate or school proxies. Since they also hide the user's own IP address from the web sites they access through the proxy, they are sometimes also used to gain a degree of anonymity, called "Proxy Avoidance."
-

All the other automotive/general interest sites I check seem to be available still. They only other site I've run across in the past that was blocked was myspace. The error message I get doesn't list a reason or category for blocked sites.
-
I get blocked from Classmates and Myspace as "Dating" sites. I can get to Radio-info.com which is another Lewis Media message board site.

From time to time I get the message "An Error Has Occurred!" up on my screen while trying to read posts on AutoPuzzles.com. It also says "sorry arejh, you have been banned from this forum". Which I don't think I have. I think maybe the problem occurs when I try to browse the site in multiple windows at the same time (maybe the system interprets this as two people trying to use my account at the same time?). The solution to the problem is to erase the internet log and cookies, but it is a bit boring to do that all the time because that also erases all the web pages I DO want the browser to remember...
Anybody else noticed the same problem?

I believe I have fixed it.
Let me know if you have any more errors.
-
OK, this isn't really an error, but there seems to be an increasing amount of spam on this site. I realize that the administrators delete this and block the 'users' as soon as it is discovered, but isn't there a way to prevent this - like the way you're always asked to "repeat these numbers" when signing up for something on the Web?

Is anyone experiencing the same problems with Autopuzzles as I do recently ? For instance, when I click on a topic, the address bar stays on "http://www.a", then nothing, for 30 seconds before my browser can upload the page (which it does quite quick once allowed). It's not my connection, I don't have the probleme with other websites.
The worst is when I try to post an answer, and it gets real bad when it's a new topic with an attachment. More often than not, after one minute I get an error message saying it didn't come through because I have been disconnected.
If it happens to others, I think some people may be pissed off if they experience that and we may lose many visits.

I am not having these issues as of yesterday. I just got on the site today and will try to see if anyt5hing could be causing this. Thanks for letting me know.

I found it very much like that recently.
As with you, all other regular sites seem to work as fast as usual on the connection I have.
It took me several goes to post something with a photo this morning - at one time it told me someone had posted whilst I was composing my post, but no-one had and I think it had half-received what I'd tried to send.
Perhaps there are too many of us using it these days, or there are too many active threads ::)

If Ultra doesn't have the same trouble, I'm wondering if this has to do with us both being in Europe. It occurred to me once with some US websites, just maybe 5% of them, but it never lasted that long and here it's only with Autopuzzles. Some kind of bad transatlantic connection? Aren't these things travelling by satellite?
-
I have now just finished optimizing the forum for performance. Keep me posted as to how it is working for you.
:)
-
I've found it sometimes takes 15-30 seconds for a selected topic to open. This has happened sporadically, and I assumed it was my connection that was causing the delays.

This happens to me on rare occasion too. It can be my browser or the hosting server being very busy. The problem usually resolves itself within minutes when it occurs.
:-\
-
Nothing changed on my side of the line, though. Still seems rusty.
-
If it may be of some use, this the error message I had while trying to post a new puzzle with an attachment:
Database Error: Lost connection to MySQL server during query
File: /home/content/K/a/r/KarnUtz/html/forum/Sources/Post.php
Line: 1162

I get this message at the bottom of every AP forum page:
Page created in 1.117 seconds with 14 queries.
The pages are loading fast here. I don't know what to do to help you.
:-\

Yeah, the message about losing the connection to the server is quite frequent on my screen as well, especially when posting a new puzzle. Also, when replying to other threads I often get the message that I've already submitted the post when I haven't. That particular one is quite annoying, as it won't let me go back in my browser and post it again - it just leaves the same message no matter how long I wait, so I have to go back to the original thread and click 'reply' all over again, and write the message again.
And the message at the bottom of this very page says this at the moment:
Page created in 49.9 seconds with 22 queries.
A bit slower than in the US, I guess ;)
-
Have you tried to go back to where you wrote the post, click refresh, then submit?
-
You can copy and paste what you wrote so that you do not have to retype it.

Yes, I have - that does sometimes work when the server connection gets lost (although I have to attach the image again), but not if I get the message that I've already submitted the post. And obviously, the copy-paste thing is nice - but it's still annoying ;)

I really don't know what to say. It isn't anything I can fix that is for sure.

I don't think that is the solution. I will pester GoDaddy and see if I can improve things.

I haven't posted anything yet and don't want to be overoptimistic, but this is working much better today.

I'd suggest running a test here and sending a screen shot to the hosting company:

Ultra,
Is page caching toggled off, by any chance? I'm led to understand the turning it on speeds up page loading considerably. Since things were fine until a week or two ago, I'm thinking the problem is probably identifiable and relatively easy to fix.

I've always wondered...Those cars designed for those places where they drive on the wrong side of the road....Do they reverse the pedals, too?
OT but at least one maker in the Veteran period, Wolseley, had clutch on the right and brake on the left - but that was driven more by the layout of the transverse engine and gearbox which put the clutch on the extreme right of the car, so the nearest pedal worked it. 55 years later the designer of the Mini, which had the same general layout, did not make the same mistake. ;D
-
Thanks....you're right...it was OT, but that is the way my mind works!
-
Hey, at least it works...

Well...I do use the term loosely!

A new problem: when I tried to check two threads, I got this result:
An Error Has Occurred!
The topic or board you are looking for appears to be either missing or off limits to you.
The first was a Rookie puzzle. I know I don't have the right to post in those, but just seeing them ?
The second was a solved puzzle, and one I had started.
Strange, and new to me.
As for the problem that Allan L reports in the Photo index thread (you attach 12 pictures and only 2 make it) it's new to me also.
-
If you click a topic in mid-move or mid merge, you might encounter that error. I'm guessing you might have been trying to access the Lightburn Zeta puzzles (plural) which I merged a little while ago.
I'm not sure what's up with the picture posting, other than the recent slowing we've seen. This happened before, and left as mysteriously as it appeared. If you, Allan or anyone else wants to e-mail or PM me the pictures you would like to post, I'd be happy to load them to the server for you, and give the links to cut and paste into your posts.
~Otto.
-
Thanks for the offer, but to me the thing this site has that most don't is the facility to post pictures directly, rather than as links to somewhere they are already mounted.
That is excellent when it works and correspondingly infuriating when it does not.
Presumably what Ray B. and I have also been on about, i.e. text between photos, can only be done using links to somewhere else - that's if I have understood what I found when analysing the puzzle index postings.
-
You're right about the Zeta, Otto.
As for picture posting, I'll manage like Allan, until better times. I also appreciate the fact than you can add them directly.
