Problem with replies
« on: March 12, 2021, 04:56:09 AM »
Hi,

I've just started solving autopuzzles again after quite a few years of absence and every now and then I encounter a certain technical problem.

When replying in a thread, I get the message "The last posting from your IP was less than 30 seconds ago. Please try again later." even when it's my first post of the day. After that I go back and duly wait about a minute before trying to post again, only to get the message "You already submitted this post! You might have accidentally double clicked or tried to refresh the page." But when I check the thread, my reply is not there.

It takes a few such attempts to finally post a reply. Has any of you encountered this issue before?

PS. It does not only concern replies. When I tried to post this new topic, it also took me several attempts to succeed.

Yes, I occasionally get the same response that my last post was less than 30 seconds ago, sometimes when it was 2 or 3 days ago!
It's irritating but usually when I just log out then back in again and try to post my reply it works OK. I have also had the response that I've already posted that reply but again logging out and back in again seems to reset everything and I can post my reply without any problem.

Thanks! I just wanted to make sure that it's the forum software acting up and not something specific to my network.

Yes, that's some forum engine issue. Because I often have the same problem using static IP which is only mine.

This has to do with the timing between opening or refreshing a thread and then posting in it in a matter of seconds (less than 30).
Looks like it's the forum's security feature to prevent spam/bots, but it can get quite annoying.

I didn't know relogging was a workaround to this, thanks.

I've timed it. Despite what the message says, a 30 second wait is never long enough. I have to wait a minimum of 1 minute between posts. And as others have pointed out, it's sometimes not enough to wait 5 minutes, several hours, or even several days. Logging out and back in does not shorten the wait time below 1 minute; it only manages to keep you busy long enough for that minute to pass.

I haven't timed it but in my case it has to do with the page refreshing. If I don't refresh/reload the page and wait before I post the error persists no matter how long I wait.

I have tried refreshing constantly during the 30 seconds, but to no avail.

I meant after getting the error you should refresh the page once and then wait before posting again. 30 seconds or 60 as you say. If you don't refresh the page at all after getting the error and try to post the error will persist forever.

If you look at the top line in your browser, where the address of the site you are on is, there are 4 icons - a left arrow, a right arrow, a circle containing an arrow and a house symbol. The circle containing the arrow is the 'refresh' button. Try that. It probably won't make any difference but your computer might be happy that you're doing it and will stop telling you to refresh!

If that fails go upstairs and have a shower...!

I always wondered what that circle was for. Sorcery!
