Where's my picture gone?

I had a photo that appeared in the margin of my posts (think it's called an avotar but don't know why) but today it disappeared.
I have been to "edit profile" and can't find the option that lets me put my own photo there - only three prescribed lists of actors (I am not one of those), cars (I have none of the ones offered) or musicians (as all are pop performers, I do not recognise the term).
What am I not seeing?

About the same issue, I can't upload avatar pictures from my own PC.

Solution not readily presenting itself. My real life is taking priority at this time. Will get to this in due time.

"The avatar you have selected is too large or not an avatar" is all I get after the "I will upload my own picture:" routine. I even cut the picture down to 14k but no joy.
I cannot have had this difficulty before and there must be something it assumes I know but it isn't telling me.

Aaargh!

Picture size is limited to 150 x 150 pixels.

If you send me the pic, or attach it here, I'll adjust it to fit.

I have cut it down myself (as you can see) but it wasn't until I got to 75 × 50 that it loaded. At 110 × 73 it wouldn't and somewhere between those two it still didn't.

Allan,

I've resized the picture from your profile article, and re-loaded as your avatar.

If any of our newer members would like to read about Allan, and his life with cars, the article can be found here:
