Was it built in Schleswig-Holstein ?

No, it was built in Bavaria, which should put an end to further geographical questions.

Perhaps a front view might help:

Thank you Wendax. The front view does help, as the car now looks more familiar, although I'm still struggling to place it.

Do you know if the rear section of the bodywork is original, or has it possibly been replaced and/or modified as some point, as the front end rings a vague bell, but the rear doesn't.

In fact I don't know. There is a better known car of the same model with a quite different body.

The fact that there was more than one suggests that this was built by a company, rather than an individual. So, was this car a prototype or offered for public sale?

Given its BMW 02-Series connection, is there any link with the Bayer BMW K67 prototype (possibly the chassis on the left)?

Two points for you.

According to its owner, four or five K67 prototypes were built. This car was built at MBB (Messerschmitt-Bölkow-Blohm) and once had a rotary engine. After it was sold to an employee, it was converted to an Opel Kadett engine and used for about 100,000 km in everyday traffic.

Wow, thanks Wendax, a bit of a lucky guess as the car rang a very distant bell, and there aren't many other BMW 02-based prototypes. The more familiar fastback coupe K67 is certainly a much prettier car!
