For Customs & Hot-Rod lovers, here's what I found in an old magazine.
No details, no name, nothing at all.
2 points for a correct and motivated ID.
-
Is that the Red Barron? (no pun intended)
-
I've got a color picture of this car here somewhere. I'll dig it up.
-
Wow, it already got a name!
-
Can't find the pic.
I'd be pretty surprised if Ray or Metalshapes doesn't have this one filed somewhere.
-
I don't. I keep very few files.
-
I don't know this car, but if Otto is right....
-
I'm fairly certain that Otto is correct. Here is a link posted on Forgotten Fiberglass that shows the same car or at least body and setup with the Red Baron paint scheme.

-
So THAT's where I saw it! :D
-
Well, following that link, and working backwards to the airplane's builder, I'll concede this car was probably given that name as a promotional tie-in with the plane, and was built some years before the 1975 Reno Air Races.
What it was called when new, I have no idea. ???
-
Is there any additional info about this 'Red Baron''?
-
I sent an e-mail to the owner of the aviation page, he was kind enough to respond, saying he didn't know anything about the car. :(
-
I would like to declare this solved...is there any info about this "Red Baron"?
-
I can't solve my own puzzles, so I'll give you a clue I just found:
this car was shown at the 1966 Oakland Roadster Show.
The name of the builder is Ray Ke?*@#§ as you can read from my pic...
-
I think it says "Ray Keane's" or "Ray Kenna's"
-
The one just below was a former puzzle (or part of a group puzzle) that I can't find.
-
The one below is the Stiletto.

-
C'mon, this one is almost there!
-
Is "Star" part of the name?
-
I don't think you read the previous lines... ;D
I'll sum up:
This car is called Red Baron and was shown at the 1966 Oakland Roadster Show.
I would like to move it to the solved section, but I would like also a name for the builder or any additional info.
On the small pic I posted there is a barely readable name...I was hoping someone got that magazine, or another one covering that event.
-
I misunderstood. I thought it got this name later as it was painted in red... why should a pale car like this get such an odd name?
-
Are you sure about the name, resp. do you have a larger copy of the last pic?
Somehow it looks different than "Red Baron"

Nope and nope. :-\
-
I'd say Ray Kendle.
The car's name i can't figure.
-
I read something like "Star M..ta" maybe Star Meta, it could be also something like "Wax ...." though. :-\
and Ray Kendle/Kandle, yes!
-
I'm pretty sure it's not captioned "Red Baron"
-
I think I found something...
-
Now I know.
Not Red Baron or Kay.
The name is indeed Ray and it is Corvair-Based.
You can start asking, now I have the answers!
-
Did you find it on the internet?
-
From your last reply I take it that this Ray's last name isn't Keane, or Kenna, or Kendle, or Kandle, right?
-
It's Corvair based, but has side-pipes? ???
-
Did you find it on the internet?
Yes, and without any other info...
Not Keane\Kenna\Kendle\Kandle or K......
It's Corvair based, but has side-pipes? ???
Very good point!
My source reports: "fake exhausts hide Corvair base".
(I change the words, so it's not googable...)
-
Does the surname start with "H"?
-
Yes!
-
Judging by this pic, this car, (which clearly was never dubbed "Red Baron" ;) ) had it's Corvair engine mounted up front.

The answer can be found on the net...
-
This car comes from Provo, Utah.
-
It's Ray Henrie's "Stellar"
Those four words captioned say: Ray Henrie, Utah "Stellar"
I keep on searching to find anything about the obscure fact that it was Corvair engined...

Wow - you did it! :applause:
-
:applause: Bravo! :applause:
Here you are all I have about this car:
-
I added a high res pic. Now "Stellar" can be read on the bonnet.

Should it stay here? ;)
-
You are right...
...not to mention the points!

i know its an old thread, but a search of my pops name lead me here. its great to read about people interested in one of his creations and i really appreciate the kind words. means a lot, thank you.
i stumbled onto another thread very similar a while back and was able to answer a few questions for people. if anyone is interested, you can find a bit more info here: https://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/threads/ray-henries-stellar.543158/ (https://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/threads/ray-henries-stellar.543158/)

Very cool! Especially the pics!
-
glad you enjoyed them!
-
Hope you don't mind that I uploaded the pics!
The hidden frontlamps are a nice detail!
-
Very cool car , hadn't seen it before , it seemed to have been around in the 90's ,so hopefully it will have survived . Pale yellow works best imo !
Only place for the Corvair flat 6 motor to fit would appear to be in the front , the HAMB link mentions VW gearbox/trans flipped ,I wonder as the Corvair turns acw ,perhaps a VW trans is just reversed ,rather than turned upside down & a shaft at engine speed transmitting power back to it ,lots of engineering for sure ! Can see what looks like the stock VW Beetle front antiroll / sway bar beneath presumably a VW front torsion bar beam setup. Afaik Crown USA used to sell kits for putting Corvair engines into Beetles & buggies in the 60s & 70s ,engines were modded to run regular clockwise , or VW trans crownwheel swapped sides !
Possibly a good portion of a VW floorpan/chassis used , as the Corvairs are monocoque
Windscreen looks like might be 59 / 60 fullsize GM (Chevrolet / Buick / Pontiac / Olds ) sedan rear window

Allemano, np posting pix. just happy to see some interest in the car. These stories perk him right up. So again, thanks to all responding.
72must, yes, the pale yellow was its original color. The red baron theme was the gent who bought it from my Dad. He owned the local airport at the time in Idaho Falls.
i actually stumbled onto the car when I moved to Boise when I was 18. Saw a fs add for it and it ended up being within a mile or so of where i was living. My Dad just happened to be headed to visit that weekend. I took my Dad over to look at it, but it was in a sad state of affairs. It was the typical car in boxes scenario :( My Dad looked it over for about 15 min, chatted with the owner a bit then we drove away. i asked him if he was interested in buying it back. he just laughed and said "not for that price!". if I would have had any money to my name at the time I would have bought it. Just wasnt in the cards though at age 18.

The chassis was from a VW Willy. The windshield was originally a rear window from an Impala, but he could only guess that it was from a 62.
