We have a winner! Oddly enough, my information also stated the race ended in Sacremento, but that's not what is needed here. The car is correctly identified.
This was a 5-cylinder rotary-engined car which was intended for production but the prototype remained the only one built. My source reckons the car failed to reach the finish.
