Which route are we talking about here? From when to when was it operated? Who designed and built the route? Who ran the business?

Difficult to answer accurately but it could be the A5 motorway segment in Hessen, a road segment in Schleswig-Holstein (A1) or the road Baden-Württemberg (B462). All three have been used as test routes for the system developed by Seimens. Scania have built the trucks and the test scheme which started in 2019 is expected to last until 2022.

A brief history then.  Werner Von Siemens  experimented with a 'trolley bus system in the Berlin suburbs in 1882. This system, widely adopted used overhead wires and a pole with a grooved pulley to collect the elecricity. Trolleybus'  (because they followed the same route each journey) where the commonest of this type of electic vehicle. There were early truck systems particularly in instances where the vehicles ran over a predetermined route. An example of this would be the Valtellina Dam Project in Italy(1938 to 1962) . More recently the system seems to have been confined to the mining and quarry industries particularly in South Africa. Siemens have also been running an experimental system in California very similar to the German one.

Sorry if I seemed a bit grumpy the original question confused me into thinking the 'historic route' meant the history of that type of transport, not 'answers relating to the black and white picture.

In that case the answer is - The system was built by Schiemann and his "Geselschaft für gleislose Bahnen Max Schiemann & Co. Known as the "Bielatalbahn", being a 2.8 kilometre long track in Sachsen.
It carried both passengers and cargo (mainly for a paper factory).  The track operated only from 1901 to 1904, but the infrastructure was reused to build (part of) a new line close to Leipzig: the "Industriebahn Wurzen", an exclusive cargo line which was in operation from 1905 until 1928.

The cargo system consisted of 2 trolleytrucks, 10 wagons for coal transport (each with a capacity of 6 tons) and 27 wagons for flour transport (each with a capacity of 5 tons). Each truck had a power output of 25 HP and could pull a maximum of 3 wagons with a total weight of 15 tonnes (comparable to this contemporary truck).

Well thank goodness for Google Translate!  The picture shows a Schlieman road train on the trackless railway Monheim – Langenfeld route. The freight train is photographed opposite the Knipprath forest.
