Thanks for the explanation - everyone looks in such a panic I thought the bloke on the running board was perhaps trying to slam his hand over the carb intake to stop the engine running and prevent the car from hitting a building. This old 'choke it off' trick was something I once did to prevent my face being modified by an engine cooling fan as my tie was suddenly grabbed by the fanbelt. It was a millimetre-close thing, I can tell you. The lesson learned was that one should never work on a running engine with a loose tie, or indeed, with any tie on at all.....:D

Not an explanation - just a blind guess.  I totally agree with you that ties and engines don't mix.  But you do see pictures of old time mechanics wearing overalls with a tie visible at the neck.

Not just old time: we apprentices at de Havilland in the late 1950s often wore ties, but they were safely tucked into our boilersuit tops when we were in the machine shop
