I know this car from somewhere but can't think why. Looks so much like a Lotus 23 body but probably isn't  ;D .

I take it it's from the USA ?

Correct.

Dear 'nicanary',
I'm very unsure whether the chassis of this car is actually a modified Lotus 23 frame. I find it hard to believe that someone would replace the Lotus suspension components with those from a Volkswagen Beetle or a Porsche 356. Another source claims that it was a home-built chassis. The bodywork strongly resembles that of the Lotus 23—possibly a fiberglass replica. Downing later drove a Lotus 23B. As the crash photo shows, that car clearly had nothing to do with VW suspension. ;)
