A new batch of puzzles from me.
My last batch was almost solved within 24 hours so I've changed these to a wide variety of vehicles.

The first one should be relatively easy.
Name, year and what racing formula it was designed for is required for a point.

Ah..I was also in a queue  :D
Except for the date - some (most) sources say the car is from c.1953-1954.

I agree, it looks much older than a fifties child, but I thought I had to mention that version as well :)

Wow, that was quick!
Yes, that's correct and it is from 1939.
Bad luck Faksta - many more of this type of car to come.....

Something's wrong here!   ???

If the car was built in 1939 then it was NOT built as a Formula 1 car as Formula 1 was not introduced until 1947!

What is could be is a car built in 1939 to compete in the 1500cc or Voiturette class of racing that was later entered in a [1947-1953] Formula 1 race.  Or it could be a car built in 1947-53 as a Formula 1 car using an engine produced in 1939.

You are correct there D-Type, something does not ring true.
I'll dig around to see if I can come up with the true story behind this prototype.
In the meantime does anyone else have any further input?

From what i can find out, the Guidobaldi engine probably dates from the 30s while the car was built in 1951.

The car had a strange suspension system with the wheels leaning inward on corners which was patented by Guidobaldi in 1957

The radial engine has 8 cylinders which means that it has to be a 2-stroke as for a technical reason that I don't understand, a 4-stroke radial has to have an odd number of cylinders.

Quite so. It says it's a 2-stoke on that notice and also that it's a supercharged 1500cc, so a voiturette like the Alfetta.
For equal firing intervals over the 720 degrees of crankshaft rotation the four-stroke cycle takes, you fire every second cylinder in turn which, with an odd number, brings you back to the start in those two revolutions. If you see what I mean.

I've searched my library but come up with very little that hasn't already been said here.
There has been quite a lot of discussion on TNF (with photos) and there was apparently a four-page article in Sports Car Graphic magazine March/April 1960.

Reading between the lines, I have come to the conclusion that the engine dates back to the 1930s (Francois Guidobaldi first produced a radial engine in 1930) whilst the car appears to date from 1951.
Certainly one of the oddest designs for a single-seater ever produced.

I have altered the title accordingly and thank everyone for their contributions.

I like to think that I know most racing cars from the post-war period, but this is new to me, and a lot of other people, apparently. What is it?

Yes. This creation had a 2-stroke, twin supercharged, aircooled 8-cylinder radial engine! It's not in the usual reference books even though it complied with then-current F1 regulations. It was built as an experiment into tilting wheels/suspension for cornering.

Re-post from 2011:

MJW #400 - Guidobaldi monoposto radial-engined prototype 1939/1951

(Searching for "Guidobaldi" finds both puzzles.)

The previous puzzle includes a lot of interesting technical information about this car.
