DB #0002 - 1990 Chevrolet Corvette ZR-1 with Lotus Active Suspension System

So here is an engine.  It's not a particularly obscure engine, but there's something different about THIS particular engine bay.

Please tell me what SPECIFICALLY is different about the engine shown here, and the SIGNIFICANCE of the vehicle it's installed in.

(It might be helpful to identify the car first.)

Engine is Lotus developed V8 for the Corvette ZR-1.

Oil pipes was hydraulics for the active suspension they were developing, but did not use until later.

Yes, this is a 1990 Corvette ZR-1 with the Lotus-developed active suspension system.  This was the first vehicle equipped with a fully-active, variable springing and damping system that was available for evaluation on a [relatively] broad scale.  Unfortunately, the hydraulic pump required about 40 hp just to keep the system operational, so the system wasn't implemented for production.
