A hint: he is still alive, and that is a bigger hint than it looks like.

It is a big hint, as there is a film documentary in production called "American Dreaming", dealing with post-war car design from the 1940s to the early 1970s. The makers are aiming to interview designers who were active during this period, and are still alive. There's a short video preview available online, and at one point the puzzle picture appears in the background - screencap below.

I must admit I hadn't heard of him, but this is Rodell Smith, currently 92 years old, who worked for Ford, Hudson, Packard and Chrysler.

Well found. Is that documentary going to be a film or television release? It definitely sounds like something I want to see.
