Any idea what this is? One point on offer for the correct answer.  :)

That's the Lee Oldfield Special. Built for the 1937 Indy 500, the car featured a mid-rear mounted Marmon V16. Being quite a mash-up, the car was never sorted enough to make a qualifying run.

What is the year, who is the builder, what is the engine, and what is the raace?
I must be right - that's what it says on Wikipedia

Rear engined - must be an Auto Union ..... :lmao:

I know it isn't.  People also look very North American.  S I guess another Indy racer, but the rear engine (which appears to be sizable) makes this one interesting.

I'll keep an eye on it.

You're getting there. It is from the USA, and the engine is larger than usual.

OK.  Looked up first rear engined car in the Indy 500 and found something else.  Than I found one which tried first, albeit not successful:

It's a Marmon V16 Monster.

LOCKED for you. Could you tell me the year and builder ?

As mentioned earlier I thought it is a Marmon (Marmon Motor Car Company). The year is .... either 1936 or 1937.  I have both dates from different sources.

I go with 1936.

It was probably built during the winter of 1936, because it entered the 1937 Indy 500. So you're correct with both years,

Please answer the last question - who was the builder? It's available on the internet! Still LOCKED for longtom.

Unlocked ( I forgot!) and up to the Experts for an easy point.

This thing must have been a real handful in the corners - or even on the straights. All that weight at the rear plus swing axles! ???  ???

And the point goes to sixtee5cuda. I have no idea what's happened to longtom, but his loss is your gain.

The monster of a car failed to qualify for the race - now there's a surprise!

Longtom seemed really keen and knowledgeable so it's a pity we've lost him (he last logged in on 16th August).
I don't think he liked being asked how he solved a puzzle, but it's his loss to be so touchy; everyone here understands the need to be sure all are playing by the rules and no accusation was made.

Exactly. I thought his explanation was perfectly plausible. It's not the first time we've had this sort of response to a simple query and I think it's sad that someone reacts in this way (if in fact that's what's happened - maybe there have been other reasons for his disappearance).
