It's a Kaiserslautern car, from 1958. I'm sure it's been puzzled before!

You're right, yes it is.  What's the base though?
I think it has been featured before; I can't remember why I posted it again but maybe some of the information is a little different this time around.
Locked for you to complete.

Oh, I'm pretty sure it IS a VW - I have seen photographs of the engine which is definitely a VW unit.

barrett

edit - sorry for double post, but apparently it is 'Porsche 356 based' or at least has a 356 engine, but I suspect it is on a VW chassis

Carnut

Yes, apparently that's what it is.
I can't find a previous puzzle for this so I've given you your point and moved it to Solved.
Well done.

Here's another picture:

That one was VW-based though, as were a lot of their cars, but this puzzle is said to be Porsche 356-based..

If you delve back in to the dark recesses of the internet, all reference to this car refer to it as a VW. Very recently, the current owner penned an article which describes in detail the Porsche 356 engine but is somewhat wooly about the chassis. I wouldn't want to cast aspersions but I think this might be a case of somebody wanting their car to seem more important than it actually is - it may have a Porsche 356 motor these days, but I'm pretty sure it is on a VW chassis. The MHK cars all seem to have been built on cheap, readily available and rather pedestrian mechanical parts.

My point is, it probably is that previous puzzle of yours, as back in 2010 there was no reference online to this car being anything other than a VW!

Carnut

Yes, I'm sure you're right.
Since the original puzzle doesn't have any pictures though I think I'll leave it in Solved as a separate puzzle.

A few pictures of the car under construction have been found in the MHK archives:

Offered for sale in the UK in 2020 and described as having been built "upon a Karmann Ghia unibody chassis with hand-formed steel bodywork and powered by a Porsche 356a air-cooled engine."
