#4 AC Cobra coupe Le Mans

It 1964 it was tested on the M1 motorway in the UK at 186mph, It was a time when there was no speed limits and a number of manufacturers used to test their cars on the motorway.

A reporter from the Times picked up the story and blew it up out of all proportion.  3 years later when the 70mph speed limit was introduced on UK motorways the incident with the AC was quoted as being a contributing factor to the decision to impose the limits.

#3  1966 Le Mans

At the last pit stop, three Mark II GT40s were in front. Ken Miles and Denny Hulme were leading, followed by Bruce McLaren and Chris Amon on the same lap. Ronnie Bucknum and Dick Hutcherson were third, but twelve laps behind.

At the finish, Ford decided to stage a publicity photo between Miles/Hulme and McLaren/Amon with the No. 5 following, too.

According to witnesses, McLaren left a small margin to Miles and it was expected than Miles/Hulme will be declared winner after the examination of the photo finish.  But the Automobile Club de l'Ouest (ACO) declared the McLaren/Amon car had won the race, having covered more distance in 24 hours, as it had started the race several places behind the Miles/Hulme car.   The ACO estimated the difference to 8 meters.

This was a terrible disappointment for Ken Miles who expected the triple crown of Daytona-Sebring-Le Mans as a reward for his investment in the GT40 development.

#2 is the Andrea Doria and her load of concept cars that went down.  My grandmother and father were supposed to be on that voyage and missed the boat.

The Chrysler Norseman was a concept car built in 1956. It was a four-seat coupe. Although designed by Chrysler Corporation's stylists, actual construction was contracted out to the Italian coach-building firm of Ghia. Ghia already had experience in the construction of low-volume vehicles and one-off prototypes, having built the very successful Lincoln Futura concept the previous year. It took Ghia's craftsmen well over a year to build the complex Norseman.

The car was to be a featured attraction of Chrysler's auto show exhibit for 1957 and was shipped by Ghia to New York City in July 1956. The car was booked on the ill-fated liner SS Andrea Doria, which was involved in a collision off the coast of Massachusetts and sank, with the loss of forty-six lives and all its cargo.

The Norseman, as a result, was never shown to the public and was never seen by most of the stylists who worked on it. It is well known to automotive historians, however, via photographs and specifications. Chrysler never used the cantilevered roof design in any subsequent vehicle.

#5 1955 Le Mans

Not the greatest event in motorsports history, I think this is the crash where Pierre Levegh (Mercedes SLR) and 82 spectators died  and over 100 were injured

It was in the third hour of racing on the Tribunes straight, he clipped the Healey of Lance Macklin, hit an earth bank, launched into the air and the car disintegrated as it flew into the crowd. Levegh was thrown from the car and died on impact.
