Is it an American one-off?

It was constructed in the USA but the base is a volume manufacturer.

Corvair?

No.

Please note - the bodywork was made in the USA. Just in case I misled anyone.

Looks like a TR4/TR6 windshield. Triumph-based?

YES! It is indeed. LOCKED for gte4289. All I need to know is the actual model of Triumph and you've earned a point, because I know nothing else about the car!

TR4A?

Yes - the point is yours.

I found this puzzle subject at a time when I was short of potential material. That's not meant to disrespect you! My problem is that I know nothing more about the car. It was for sale in Louisiana on Craigslist for $4000. I think the windscreen surround is fairly recognisable.

I'm so surprised that so few members bothered to ask the right questions. Good for you.
